Let \(\tau_1\) and \(\tau_2\) be topologies on a set \(X\). The topology \(\tau_1\) is finer than \(\tau_2\) if \(\tau_2\subseteq\tau_1\), and coarser than \(\tau_2\) if \(\tau_1\subseteq\tau_2\). The topologies \(\tau_1\) and \(\tau_2\) are comparable if \(\tau_1\subseteq\tau_2\) or \(\tau_2\subseteq\tau_1\).
